Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2017/09/10

What do you mean I owe you?

Don’t worry, the title of this post does not mean:

  • you owe me money
  • I owe you money
  • anyone owes anyone money

We are still on Romans and we have reached chapter 13. Paul seems to be a little confused by verse eight, where we are told to “owe no one anything”; except this:

“Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13.8 NRSV)

So what is it? Do we owe people something or not? We do, we don’t owe money, we owe something else . . . love.

This is what we are looking at this time around. What does it mean to owe someone love? How do we do that? I hope that once you listen to one or the other of these messages you’ll have a better idea. If you don’t, and I made things cloudier, let me know and I’ll try it again.
