Who’s a preacher? What’s a sermon?

This Sunday we spent some time working out what exactly a preacher is, who is preacher and what is a sermon. It was fun.

The sermons were drawn from our Gospel lesson and revolve around the age old question, how do people hear something unless someone tells it to them? There was an opportunity to spend quite a bit of time discussing the question, is general revelation, i.e. nature, creation in general, sufficient for salvation but I turned my back on that opportunity . . . although it wasn’t easy. Instead we talked about how the way that everyone is going to have an opportunity to hear is if everyone is a preacher but not necessarily the same kind of preacher that I am every Sunday. The words that I came back to over and over again when I was thinking through this Sunday were, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.”

Knox Presbyterian Does “everyone” means everyone?

St. Mark’s Presbyterian Does “everyone” means everyone?

I hope you enjoy one or both of these sermons. In the spirit of fair play, I will warn you that if you listen to them and you are a believer in God through Jesus Christ, you will be sent to preach the Gospel . . . and if necessary, use words.

Blessings,

    Is that real wisdom?

Wisdom. This is another word, from a quite short list of religiously significant words, that hasn’t been debased or redefined into uselessness. Wisdom still means something to almost everyone even if it is hard to define. It is a word with generally positive connotations and something virtually everyone wants. We want political and other leaders…
