The title of this blog post isn’t as useful as some but the sermon title, “Do we have to sin? Should we?” wasn’t all that great either. Sometime I’ll have to write a blog post just on sermon titles and what I think they do or can do.
What these sermons are about is the mystery of reckoning ourselves dead to sin. What does that even mean? The actual verse is “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Rom 6:11 NRSV). How do we consider ourselves dead to sin without moving into some sort of psychopathology? Is Paul suggesting that we intentionally move into a delusional state as it relates to ourselves and sin? Fortunately the answer is “no.” No, we don’t have to do that. What we do have to do is begin to live our lives with the firm understanding that we are not required to sin; we can choose to not sin. The sermons make this a bit more clear so I hope you give them a listen and let me know what you think in the comments.
