Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2022/10/30

Why do we want to know?

We humans seem to have some sort of built-in compulsion to know “why?” As someone once commented, “we want to know why, and we want to know why we want to know why, even though we never will” as what it means to be human.

There is a subset of spiritually aware people who want to know who is “in” and who is “out.” I know what it is to be this way because I was in this subset for some time. There was ongoing speculation as to who was “saved” and who wasn’t. I am at a bit of a loss at this remove to remember why this was important but it was.

The sermon title for both sermons this Sunday is, “Looks like anyone can be saved” and it is one of my responses to the idea that we can know who God is going to “let in” and who God won’t.

As always, let me know what you think as you are inclined and able.
