I was momentarily tempted to run this post with black borders but in the end, I thought that might be a bit much. Last night, October 13, 2023, was the Service of Dissolution for Knox Presbyterian in Briercrest, SK.
A Service of Dissolution is the final service when a congregation has determined that they have finished the work they were called to do. There are some significant similarities with a funeral only there is no dead person and the functional equivalents are all quite alive and present.
It is never an easy decision to close a church. This decision was made after extensive conversation with the regular attendees, the elders, the interim moderator, and the Presbytery. It was not made lightly but it was the correct decision; as such, the service had elements of celebration and sadness.
I was of two minds about posting this sermon but in the end, I determined it may be helpful for some to be able to hear it or hear it again. As always I am interested in anything you may have to say regarding the sermon or this post.
