Peaceful?

Peace seems to be something everyone is in favour of, as long as the other party makes whatever changes need to be made. At the moment, the world is not a very peaceful place. There are more armed conflicts in more places than any of us can keep up with. Political and civil discourse is anything but civil and seems to be getting worse all the time. Violence of action and violence of words seems to be becoming the norm. And into all of this, we lit the candle of peace this morning.

I am a much more peaceful person, or at least a more peace-interested person, than I was when I was quite a bit younger. I enjoyed conflict, if I was more-or-less guaranteed to win. I guess I didn’t enjoy conflict, I enjoyed winning at conflict. Not anymore. I seldom see any value in conflict, even the so-called creative conflict, while appreciating the benefits of peace. But how?

How can we be peaceful in a world that simply isn’t and refuses to try to be? Well, I preached a sermon about peace that you might find useful. I hope you do.

    Mountains

Mountain tops aren’t what they used to be. I have heard it is now possible to make and receive cell phone calls at the top of Mount Everest. Mountain-top experiences, those moments of transcendence, on the other hand, are still happening. There are many places where these experiences happen–camp, camping, nature, even mountains–we love them…
