Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2023/03/05

“Why” isn’t always a question

Sometimes the word “why” isn’t so much a question as a reason. You will sometimes hear people being asked, not “Why are you doing this?” but rather, “What’s your why?” which is a different question. You hear the question in various circles – recovery, Mom Hugs, etc – meaning, “What’s the reason you are in recovery, or whatever it might be?”

The “why” we are talking about is Jesus’ “why.” Of course, everyone who has been in the church for any length of time knows the answer but I have found it virtually always worth taking another look at the things I already know. This also gives me an opportunity to talk about the best verse in John 3 and you might be surprised which one it is.
