Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2021/10/03

Jesus, angels, and us

We don’t talk about angels very much, and I’m afraid I’m not going to talk about them a lot this Sunday, but they will come up.

The book of Hebrews is a very interesting book, we don’t even know for certain who wrote it. Nonetheless, it is well worth the time we might put in to see what it has for us.

Today’s text reminds us Jesus became like us, “Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels.” (Hebrews 2:9 NRSV) The status of being a bit lower than angels is the same status we, as humans, have.

It is impossible to overemphasize how important it is that Jesus became like us. Jesus’ willingness to become a human being, while remaining fully divine, is at the core of our beliefs.

I hope you get something worthwhile from the sermon and if you do, or even if you don’t, please feel free to let me know.
