Have you ever been called? As rhetorical questions go, that isn’t a very good one. Everyone had been called. We have been called on the phone, called to the phone, called names, called to PASS THE BALL!!, called for dinner, the list is endless. We have been called by our parents, siblings, friends, partner(s), enemies, telemarketers, . . . another endless list. How about this for a better question, and it isn’t rhetorical, “Have you ever been called by God?”
The short answer is, “Yes.” If you are alive you have been called by God. If you feel you have not been called by God, it is possible you have some of the texts from this Sunday in your head. Abram was called by God to leave one land and go to another. Matthew was called to leave his tax collector’s booth and follow Jesus. Both of those are calls and in all likelihood, you haven’t had a call like those. Those kinds of calls are not frequent. But, and this is an important “but,” God has called you.
You may not have been called to go somewhere as a cross-cultural minister or relief and development worker. You may not have been called to become a minister or a preacher or . . . . . and it is okay that you haven’t. You have been called to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and to love your neighbour as yourself.
