Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

Is it okay to celebrate?

Celebration is a good thing so why would I be asking if it is okay to celebrate? I assure you I am not crazy. It is a question worth asking today, Palm Sunday, as we are on the cusp of Holy Week. Is it okay to celebrate Jesus’ triumphant arrival in Jerusalem when we know what happens to him less than a week later? Obviously we aren’t going to rebuke those who were actually there all those years ago, they couldn’t know what was coming. But we do, hence the question, Can we celebrate the arrival?

As the sermon makes clear, it is okay for us to celebrate Palm Sunday because today is the day to celebrate that memory. I paraphrase Richard Rohr in the sermon as I characterize human beings as those who hate the present. I’ve talked about this before but it is especially germane today.

I am curious, as I so often am, about what you think of this way of thinking. Let me know.
