What’s wrong with upside down?

So what is wrong with upside down? Well, everything, if you are properly oriented to the world. The thing is, when the world is upside down, or better, “upside down,” then everything is wrong. And, our world is upside down.

We are in a time when what was formerly considered undoable, or even unthinkable, is being thought and done. Wealth inequality has grown exponentially in my lifetime. The gap between the haves and the have-nots isn’t really shrinking. I do not for a moment want to dismiss the real progress that has been made since I became conscious of a world larger than my family, but the progress is so much less than it could be.

When Jesus says he wants to set the world on fire, he isn’t talking about the environmental catastrophe we are living through. The Christ wants to set the system on fire. The Sermon on the Mount is about a completely different way of life, and we are called to help set things right, upright if you wish.

This week’s sermon is my small attempt at discussing how we are to be salt and light and setting-right-side-up people. I don’t know if I got it the best way but if I didn’t, please let me know as you are inclined and able.

    Hypocrisy

There is a feeling out there that the church is full of hypocrites. I didn’t preach about the notion because I think there are far better things for us to think about than this. Jesus has some hard things to say about hypocrites, which seem to be deserved. If these aren’t sermons about hypocritical churchgoers…
