There is a feeling out there that the church is full of hypocrites. I didn’t preach about the notion because I think there are far better things for us to think about than this.
Jesus has some hard things to say about hypocrites, which seem to be deserved. If these aren’t sermons about hypocritical churchgoers they are neither sermons bashing hypocrites.
The thing I try to remember when I encounter hypocrisy is virtually no one wants to be a hypocrite. If I can approach hypocritical people from the perspective of “This person could very well be doing the best they can with what they have” it allows me to see them as actual human beings rather than an hypocrisy dispensing mechanism. It is only when I can see people as fully as I am able that I can try to understand them and communicate with them rather than an idea or statement or action I don’t like.
As always, let me know what you think about one or both of the sermons.
