Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2021/09/26

What do you mean by share?

We all know we are supposed to share.* We even do it at least now and then but today is Presbyterians Sharing Sunday for the Presbyterian Church in Canada so it is worth taking a closer look at what this might mean.

Presbyterians Sharing is the name of the combined efforts of Presbyterians all across Canada to make a difference by pooling resources, primarily money, to make the most significant, positive difference possible. Every time anyone donates to this they should feel good about what they are doing and I celebrate with them. The question is, Is that all there is to do? The answer, it will come as no surprise to you, is no, there is more to do than simply giving money.

The epistle text for this special Sunday is 1 Corinthians 12: 27–31 which is one of the places where Paul talks about spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are given to us, not only for ourselves but for us to share with others.

The sermon celebrates some of what is being done by Presbyterians Sharing but it also reminds us we have a lot of sharing to do ourselves.

Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

*Robert Munsch has a great story called, We Share EVERYTHING, which I can’t recommend strongly enough.
