We are getting words for Christmas!

The Fourth Sunday of Advent coincides with Christmas Eve this year so in a slight departure from my usual pattern the Scripture Lessons come both from Advent 4 and Christmas Eve Lectionary selections. This worked out well for a couple of reasons. First, it allowed us to celebrate both Advent 4 and Christmas Eve. Second, it allowed me to have John 1:1-14 as the Gospel lesson.

The sermon title, “We are getting words for Christmas!” is a bit of a play on the prologue to John’s Gospel where we encounter Christ as Word. I wasn’t sure how many words I was going to talk about us getting for Christmas but in the end it was primarily two, “rest” and “Word” with some talk about love added at the end because if preaching isn’t about the good news I’m not sure what it is doing and I’m not sure how anyone can talk about the good news without bringing love into it.
