Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2022/11/20

This year’s last Sunday?

Yes it is this Liturgical year’s last Sunday. Next Sunday we begin again with the First Sunday of Advent. The last Sunday of the church year is called either the Reign of Christ Sunday or Christ the King Sunday and it provides us an opportunity to consider what it might mean for Jesus to be king.

King of what? King of who? What does this king do? Canadians have a king for the first time in active memory but Charles III doesn’t have much of an impact on us on a day-to-day basis. So what might it mean to have Jesus as a king?

The sermons this Sunday are devoted to trying to answer the last question above. It is fairly obvious Jesus isn’t a king like the ones we read in history books, nor the queens either for that matter. Jesus’ kingship is completely different than those. Jesus’ kingship is a matter of a sovereign more concerned about their people than about themselves or any particular view of pride or honour.

Give the sermons a listen and let me know what you think of this view of a sovereign.

I haven’t commented lately Barry so it’s time to say “thank you” again for being my Pastor. I appreciate your sermons very much and am strengthened and encourage by them. Thank you for the time and care and, I know prayer, you put into them to “feed” us each week. May the Lord strengthen and encourage you too this week.
