Lent. Yes, it’s a good thing.

The season of Lent is upon us. It comes every year so I’m hoping no one was surprised by it. Oddly enough, I was sort of surprised. This year has been an odd one with a postponed knee replacement and a new job and just . . . stuff.
When I consulted the Lectionary texts I realized it was the first Sunday in Lent coming up and today was the day. So what do I say about Lent that a) I haven’t said before; and, b) someone else hasn’t said better. I took a look and this is at least the thirty-first First Sunday in Lent service I have led. What makes me think I have something new to say about Lent? Well, nothing. The good news is I don’t have to have anything “new” to say about Lent. As I have mentioned before it was a dorm floor-mate who helped me see the point of preaching is not novelty but the proclamation of truth.
The true thing I decided to say about Lent this year was that it’s a good thing. Lent gets a bad rap, especially from people who don’t observe it, so I thought I’d focus on the positive aspects of the season. I am hardly ever the best person to determine whether or not I accomplished what I was hoping to in a sermon so I’ll leave that to you.
As always, let me know what you think as you are inclined and able.
I hope I have opened your eyes to the goodness of the season of Lent.
Blessings,
