Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2021/04/04

Good news or best news?

Everyone likes good news. Whether it is a profound as the safe delivery of a new baby or as simple as the news your team won a game; we all like to hear good things.

Today is Easter Sunday also called Resurrection of the Lord. Jesus’ resurrection is good news. New Testament Greek has a single word for good news and the word is “Gospel.” So the book of John in the New Testament can be called “The Good News According to John.” Each of the first four books of the New Testament are individual perspectives on good news.

I was struck, however, by the possibility that the news of Jesus’ resurrection wasn’t just good news but the best news. One of the things I point out, briefly because I can go on and on about this sort of thing, is it possible to use “best” in a non-totalizing way and go on from there. Let me know what you think.

He is risen! He is risen indeed!
