Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2022/05/22

A gift

I have never met a person who hates gifts. I have met a lot of people who don’t always like all the stuff around gift giving–the expectations, disappointments, forced gratitude–but the idea of “gift” is okay.

We often don’t know what to do with gifts and that’s even more likely when we don’t see a gift for what it is. I grew up with a particular view of the Holy Spirit. This view didn’t lend itself easily to seeing the Holy Spirit as the gift she is. In our Gospel lesson, Jesus tells his disciples the Holy Spirit is going to be coming and “will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” (NRSV) His disciples don’t have to earn the Holy Spirit, she is simply given. A gift.
