Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2018/10/07

Thankful for all those siblings

Thanksgiving Sunday, at least in Canada. As you know if you’ve been following me for any length of time you know I don’t pay a lot of attention to the secular calendar when it comes to what I talk about on Sunday. I don’t dislike Fathers/Mothers Day or any of the others but I don’t feel any need to try to fit them into what the Lectionary has us looking at on Sunday. This year however, I found myself seeing a strong connection between the Lectionary and Thanksgiving. So what could I do but preach about thankfulness and all that goes with it.

Most of us don’t think immediately of the book of Hebrews when we think of thankfulness, I suspect most people are going to head to the Psalms. What I found there made me thankful. I am grateful for Jesus’ role in creation. I am grateful for Jesus’ role in redemption. I am grateful to have Jesus as a sibling which means I go from my three brothers to everyone else who is a sibling of Jesus . . . a pretty big family and even if some members occasionally drive me crazy I’m still grateful for you all.
