So. How many commandments are there really?
There are a lot of different definitions of the word “commandment.” No matter which definition you use, there are a lot of commandments in the Bible. This leads to the question by at least some people, how many are there? This isn’t a bad question, even if it is hard to answer, it is more that it is the wrong question.
Commandments are about what we should do, so perhaps a better question is, what should we do, informed by any number of commandments in the Bible? I freely admit it’s a “clunky” question but doesn’t it get to what we might actually want to know?
If we answer the second question rather than the first we get a better and more useful answer, namely, we should love. We should love, full stop; or perhaps, we should love, ellipsis.
I am curious, yes I know I’m always curious, but I’m especially curious to hear what you think about this week’s sermon. Let me know as you are inclined and able.
By the way, the internet problems referenced at the beginning of the sermon were more or less solved but I’m hoping for a better technology Sunday next week.
