Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2018/09/02

Now we’re talking religion

I know, I know, I know. The two things you are never supposed to talk about are money and religion. I’m not sure what I have to say about money that anyone might want to hear but I do have a few things to say about religion. Interestingly, the older I get the fewer things I have to say but I still have some.

The Lectionary has us in the book of James and today’s reading has a very interesting statement about religion, namely, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” (James 1:27 NRSV) But what does it mean?

I’m not going to say I have all the answers about religion but if you have the time to listen to a sermon or two, I’d be delighted to hear what you think about what I have to say.
