New clothes for a new year?

I don’t think about clothes very much. I understand clothes and I can tell the difference between good and bad, well-made and poorly-made but I don’t make much use of that knowledge, at least when it comes to my own clothes. One of the things I do pay attention to when it comes to my clothes is when they no longer fit. When they don’t fit, I get replacements.

There are a couple of our Lectionary texts this Sunday that talk about clothes. In the Old Testament we have the story of Samuel’s mother, Hannah, making him a new robe every year, presumably as he grew out of them. Our epistle lesson, Paul exhorts the Colossians to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” (Col 3:12b NRSV) The sermon today plays with the metaphor of clothing quite a bit and I think draws some quite useful parallels. As always, let me know what you think as you are able and inclined.

Quick note: there may not be a sermon here next Sunday but then again there might. Bev may have me read the sermon she is going to deliver. Come back next week and see what’s up.
