At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

Memory and peace

How are memory and peace connected? I suppose an equally useful question is, Are they connected? I think they are. I think they are connected in a particular way.

I don’t know anyone who is opposed to the notion of peace. In fact, I know many people who are completely in favour of peace. It comes as no surprise some of the most fervent peace advocates are those who have been in active combat or conflict. We want peace because it is better than non-peace, whatever it may look like, but when we look around we see precious little of it. This is where memory, or remembering, comes in.

The Bible speaks frequently of an ultimate peace, something which we most certainly do not experience now. Do we disbelieve Scripture? I suggest we remember the promises of Scripture we have seen come to fulfillment already and apply the confidence of experience to the promise of peace.

As always, let me know what you think.
