Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2018/05/06

Let’s talk friends

Friend. One of the most powerful and evocative words in the language. I have never encountered anyone who says they have too many friends, in this case Facebook friends do not count. We love the friends we have. We want to have friends.

So what do we do with Jesus saying in John 15 where he calls us “friends.” Not servants (or slaves depending on your translation) but friends. If we are friends with Jesus how does that change things? Does it change things at all?

The short answer is, yes. Yes it does change things. This Sunday we were looking at how things change and how much similarity there is between our friendships with other people more or less like us and our friendship with Jesus. Let me know what you think.

PS I was tempted to link to the song “Thank You For Being A Friend” but after it having been put to use as a television theme song I wasn’t sure, feel free to give it a listen though.
