Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

John’s first letter – John’s declaration

If this Sunday was closer to the Fourth of July I might have thought to play around with John’s declaration of non-independence but I only thought of it now so we are stuck with what I was thinking before.

John is not the most opaque writer in the Bible but he definitely makes the short list. 1 John opens with him saying “I declare to you . . .” and I’m afraid it isn’t quite as clear as we might like as he goes on. But, when we look at the verses the Lectionary directs us to this Sunday we can see at least a couple of things John is declaring, namely, God is light and sinless.

The sermon revolves around what those two things mean for us and takes a short side trip to make sure we don’t think John is telling us we can be literally perfect. Let me know what you think.
