How should we be?

This Sunday is Restorative Justice Sunday but, in the end, I was not able to come up with a sermon up to the task; so, I went in a different direction.
The Lectionary texts prodded me to think about what we should do. This was the beginning of the process that got me to “How should we be?” with a brief consideration of Francis A. Schaeffer’s book and subsequent film series called “How Should We Then Live?”. However, I kept getting stuck on the notion of “doing.” There are endless options for things to do but how do we choose? How do we become the kind of people we want to be, namely the kind of people who choose the right thing to do?
I confess I did make the old joke(?), or aphorism, or whatever it is: we are not human doings but rather human beings. Paul has some interesting things to say about this, and his writings are where the bulk of the sermon lands. I’m sorry if you were looking forward to a lengthy eschatological discussion of Isaiah and Luke because I just didn’t cover those in much detail.
As always, please let me know what you think as you are inclined and able.
Blessings,
