How do we do it?

I don’t often change my mind about what I am going to preach about once I have the sermon title. Sermon titles, the idea of them, bring out opinions in people. I know folks who think the title doesn’t really matter other than it shouldn’t be actively misleading. I am one of the group who think sermon titles are really important. Most preachers fall somewhere between these two poles. I mention this solely because this is a rare occurrence, namely I changed the direction of the sermon after I had a title. The interesting thing to me is that I didn’t have to change the title to go in this different direction.

My original idea was to preach out of Luke (Luke 6:17-26) but after listening to Rev. Amanda Currie talk about the Old Testament lesson (Jeremiah 17:5-10) and the Psalm (Psalm 1) I realized talking about trees was the way to go. I have never thought of us as trees, Psalm 1 notwithstanding, which is a little surprising so come along with me and let’s talk about trees.

As always, let me know what you think as you are inclined and able.
