Are we struggling alone? Are you?
It seems to live is to struggle. I’m not convinced that life is “nasty, brutish, and short.” I have been trying hard not to think or speak for other people but I think struggle is a constant for all of us.
So if struggle is a common thing then why is it so hard to convince ourselves we are not struggling alone. I was drawn to the alternate Old Testament text because it is an excellent example of someone who is quite sure they are alone in the struggle. Elijah tells God that he, Elijah, is the only person left who hasn’t bent the knee to the foreign god Baal. After an unusual conversation, God tells Elijah that there are 7,000 other people in Israel who haven’t bowed down to Baal either; Elijah was not alone. I was raised to believe that if you had God on your side, you didn’t need anyone’s help. If we look at all the places where God’s people have received help from others, who have realized they are not alone; I think the “God and me are enough” idea is a heresy.
I did talk about the Gospel text too but I’m not certain I got everything I was after, it happens. As always, let me know what you think as your able and inclined.
