Attention! Giant Ahead!
We all have giants in our lives. Everyone has had to face a metaphorical giant at some time. Our Old Testament lesson was the story of David facing Goliath; David faced a literal giant.
David was successful against Goliath and was completely confident he would be. How could he know? In the story we read how David convinced King Saul to let David go face Goliath because of his previous success dealing with lions and bears. Obviously a well-armed, highly trained, oversized person is a different challenge than a lion or a bear but David pointed out not only had he saved sheep from the jaws of lions and bears he knew he had been helped by God. David tells Saul “God was with me with lions and bears so God will be with me with this giant . . . let me at ’em.” Saul relents and we all know how the story ends, with David’s triumph.
The connection we have to this ancient story is in David’s recounting his history. As you listen to the sermon you will hear me inviting everyone to take fifteen seconds, and yes I timed it because I am me, and remember a metaphorical giant they had faced and survived, or even triumphed over, in the past. It is in our rehearsing our past and seeing, perhaps only in retrospect, where God was with us and helped us that we can locate confidence in the future.
