Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2022/05/01

Why talk about eating?

Eating. Eating is something we all do, maybe too much or too little but we all do it. Eating is something everyone in the Bible did too. If Jesus’ ministry was three years and he ate three meals a day (365 X 3 X 3 = 3285) he ate a lot of meals. So what?

My rhetorical “So what?” question was asked on your behalf. The reason I preached about this today is it is a reminder of the value of the human body, including our own. Two of our texts this Sunday talk about eating and the subject is rare enough in the New Testament to make it stick out. Why are those words there? Is there something we can take from these words? Yes, there is.

The point I am making in the sermons is simple. If Jesus is concerned enough about eating to make breakfast for his disciples if the Holy Spirit is concerned enough about eating to have Luke mention Saul/Paul eating then it behooves us to give it some thought.
