Three strange stories

The use of the word “strange” was intentionally provocative . . . and to let me have a couple of words of alliteration.
The three stories we are talking about this Sunday aren’t exactly strange but they certainly aren’t what anyone would call ordinary. Our Old Testament lesson is the story of Isaiah being taken up to heaven, our Epistle lesson is the story of the Risen, Glorified Christ meeting with Paul, and our Gospel lesson is the story of a miraculous catch of fish. What pulls these three stories together? In one way, nothing.
I think these three stories were in the Lectionary this morning to remind us, especially those of us at St. Mark’s, that God still communicates to God’s people through visions or any other means necessary. Reminds us that Christ continues to interact with any who need to meet the Risen Christ, and that includes those of us in the church already. Reminds us that miracles happen. For a congregation looking into the future I think these three stories are especially relevant. It is all too easy for us to decide we are too small, too old, too something or other to continue. These three stories remind us that our own self-assessment is irrelevant . . . even if it’s accurate.
As always, let me know what you think as you are able and inclined.
Blessings,
