Some things are hard

It is definitely true that some things are hard. I begin the sermon with a short list of things that are hard: rocks, ice, etc. We all know about hard things. If you played soccer in the 80s on the prairies, you know some pitches are hard, and so are some players.

But as hard as those physical things are, sometimes it is the things we are asked to do, that are hard. Our Gospel lesson for this week is from Luke. The first part of it is hard, “Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt.” (Luke 6:27b-29 NRSV) Really? We are supposed to do those things? Those are much harder than football pitches and rocks.

One of things I have heard Brene Brown mention in various places is, “We can do hard things.” I don’t know about you but I need to be reminded now and then that I can do hard things, even these hard things. My kids are quite tired of hearing me say, “Almost nothing of value is easy” . . . maybe I need to say it to myself as well. I have found only one thing that makes these easier, not easy, but easier. If I approach the world with gratitude all of these are still a challenge, but they are easier.

As always, let me know what you think as you are able and inclined.

  1. Thank you Barry. I needed those words to help with the wrestling of the emotions and feelings and thoughts these days.
