Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2021/01/31

Rules? Do we need them?

Look! A question for sermon title! In fact, two questions this time. As is so often the case, there is a short and easy answer, “Yes.” So we’re done? No, not really, there is a bit more to it.

It is obvious we need rules. Rules of the road keep us safe, or at least safer, on the roads. Rules of civility help us get along. Some of these rules are also laws. But if we need rules, do we need to obey all of them? Are there rules we can safely ignore or even break? Is there a way for us to tell if any particular rule is a good one or a bad one?

This sermon is one way to look at rules and what we do with them. I was hoping to give you a framework to look at rules through. Let me know if it was helpful, and especially if it wasn’t.
