No ordinary baby

I don’t know how old the image of the New Year as a baby is but I suspect it is pretty old. It seems fitting to reflect on babies in the season of Christmas and on New Year’s Eve and I was drawn to some variation on the phrase, “Not an ordinary baby” or “No ordinary baby.”

I like these phrases because they are tricks. There are no ordinary babies. As mentioned in the sermon, go to new parents and tell them their baby is “ordinary.” I recommend being out of arms’ reach when you do it. No baby, no new year is ordinary. Every baby is filled with potential which will be expressed uniquely in the world. Jesus wasn’t an ordinary baby but then again, neither were mine and neither were yours.

As we move into a new year I am going to try to remember this year, 2024, is as filled with potential as every other year and it behooves me to look for it. Care to join me?

As always I would be happy to hear what you think about the sermon or the posting as you are inclined and able.

    Expectations

There is something about our expectations. I don’t for a moment think that I’m on to something new but there is real value in reminding ourselves that generally speaking, dashed expectations create the greatest disappointments for us, even more than what might be called actual disappointments. It seems odd but it seems to be the…

    More gifts

Living with two different calendars means we don’t always get what we want on the day we want it but sometimes it does work. January 6 is the Epiphany of the Lord, and this year it fell on a Sunday, so we were able talk about the Epiphany and sing “We three kings” on the…
