Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

Miracles and/or gifts?

So what would you rather have a gift or the ability to perform miracles? It is a peculiar question to be sure but there is a reason to ask it.

The New Testament readings in the Lectionary this week are the very well-known story of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding—a miracle—and Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 talking about the gifts we are all given.

I thought it would be worthwhile to spend at least a bit of time thinking about which of these is better but only to lead us into a discussion about spiritual gifts. If you have been listening to me preach for the past few years you may recall other sermons where I talk about spiritual gifts. I have a lot to say about spiritual gifts. I even taught an undergraduate seminar about them but I promise, this is still a sermon and not a lecture.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think.
