The question we still ask is, “Who’s in and who’s out?” You might think with everything going on—climate change, economic insecurity, poverty, etc.—we would have better questions to ask, but this is still common. We want to know who is “in”; who is on our side. This is a harmless enough question when you are picking sides for a game of football in the park but it becomes considerably more fraught when we are deciding who gets to come into our group, our church, or our country.
When we ask this question about our church or our faith it is especially problematic because we don’t get to decide who is in or out. As much as it is our church or our faith we need to remember it is God’s church and faith and God says there is no out. We occasionally think God was only interested in Abraham’s family and then the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. Jesus was only interested in the Jews in the Gospels and we have to wait for Pentecost and especially Paul to get to the rest of the world. This is not true and today’s sermons (hopefully) clearly demonstrate God’s interest in and love for all people in all times. Let me know if I didn’t make it clear.
Blessings,
