The church year is almost over. This Sunday and next and then we are into Advent and a brand new year. It seemed fitting somehow to look at a text that is often used in discussions about the timing of the return of Jesus. It is all too easy to get caught up in details of what this might mean. Eschatology, the study of last things, is a perfectly fine hobby but it, like most hobbies, can get a person into trouble if it gets out of hand.
There have been many times in history when people were pretty sure they knew the exact time Jesus was returning and so far they have been 100% wrong. I think it is of less value to try and determine a calendar date for this return than it is to figure out what it means for our life at this moment. This Sunday I wanted us to spend some time reflecting on what it means that Jesus is coming back, date and time to be determined. I wanted us to remember that our end times are now regardless of any divine timetable.
