Is that a command?

Commands are funny things. We give them all the time, to electronic devices, pets, and our automobiles but we don’t like getting them very much. Commands have a heavy connotation of coercion. We are seldom commanded to do something we want to do anyway.

The Bible, especially the Old Testament, is filled with commands and commandments and statutes. It seems an impossible task to keep them all . . . and it is. The New Testament has far fewer of these things but they still pop now and then.

The commandment I am talking about today comes from Jesus and it is a command to love, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12 NRSV) It seems pretty clear to me; Jesus wants us to love each other. I am not an expert in this area but I am getting better. Let me know if I overstep with this sermon.

I’m hoping this sermon will help us feel in a visceral way, the impact this parable must have had on…

    Memory and peace

How are memory and peace connected? I suppose an equally useful question is, Are they connected? I think they are. I think they are connected in a particular way. I don’t know anyone who is opposed to the notion of peace. In fact, I know many people who are completely in favour of peace. It…
