How does that work?
Do you ever wonder how things work? I know I do. From the mysteries of a carburetor to how do humans actually learn how to talk; I have an endless list of questions. Sometimes questions are triggered by what I read in the Bible.
Our texts for this Sunday include parts of Jonah and Matthew. Both texts deal with fairness, justice, and grace. Jonah’s story is one that hits me every time I encounter it. I find myself remembering all the times I have been angry that things have not gone as I wanted them to when I had nothing to do with the actual thing/event/whatever.
The parable Jesus tells in Matthew is one of the most irritating parables ever told by anyone. The notion that people who work an hour get paid as much as those who worked a full day infuriates me, and yet . . . . The last few verses of the parable, where the vineyard owner is in dialogue with some of the workers, makes me think about fairness and grace and how they are not the same.
