Words From the Middle

At the intersection of Sacred and Profane

2021/10/10

Did you know you had a high priest?

What would anyone need with a high priest? In the Judeo-Christian tradition, there has been no need for a high priest since the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Various Christian groups have hierarchies of one sort or another but I’m drawing a blank on one with a formal high priest.

This Sunday the Hebrews text pushed me to think about what a high priest did and if there was any current requirement for the role, if not the title.

While we might not need a high priest as a person we still need the role the high priest served, namely to represent people before God. The writer of the book of Hebrews uses the language of “high priest” to help us see we have this representative in Jesus, who is fundamentally better than any previous high priest.
