How many women did it take to raise a deliverer?
I like sermon titles that are questions. If you have been following along with me for any length of time this is not a surprise to you. The questions don’t have to be provocative but if they are . . . I’m fine with that. So what about today’s question? It contains another, unasked, question, to wit, which deliverer? The deliverer in question is Moses and the number of women it took was either four or five. The list: his mother, (maybe a midwife), his sister, a servant/slave to Pharaoh’s daughter, and Pharaoh’s daughter.
Each of the women in the list was critical to Moses becoming a deliverer of the people of God. Some of the women’s importance is obvious, e.g., you can’t be anything if you aren’t born. Some of the women’s importance is less obvious. The point is, without any one of them . . . no Moses.
It is with this as a backdrop that we then looked at part of Romans 12, the part about spiritual gifts. The similarity between the story of how Moses survived his first few months and years and spiritual gifts is that no gift is unnecessary just as none of the women were unnecessary.
