Wrestling and food

The past month was a good one for me. I am one of those people who can find it difficult to take time off, at least from preaching in my case. The rest was deeply appreciated and I am immensely grateful to the good people of St. Mark’s for “making” me take time off 😄

The Lectionary texts for this Sunday posed a bit of a problem for me. As you know, if you have listened to my sermons for any length of time, I am quite willing to preach from one of the selection of texts for any particular Sunday. However, I had an ongoing feeling that looking at the Old Testament text, the story of Jacob wrestling with God, and the Gospel text, Jesus feeding the five thousand, together was the thing to do. Often these ongoing feelings have proved to be more than a simple subconscious movement but rather a gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit. It took a while, but I have learned to listen to these nudges.

I will leave it to you to decide if I brought them together in a useful way. As always, please let me know what you think as you are able and inclined.
