How about that

There is a phrase that some people use when they are surprised by something, “How about that.” I like the phrase for a few reasons but I like it best because it is so multi-purpose. “How about?”, “How about that!”, and “How about that” each have different meanings. The phrase can express surprise, incredulity, disbelief, enjoyment, . . . it is very useful.
I don’t often leave Scripture with “How about that” on my lips, literal or figurative, but something about three of the Lectionary texts moved me to say it. It comes mostly from the surprising things we learn in the story of David being anointed king in 1 Samuel, our new status in 2 Corinthians, and the miracle of seeds in Mark.
For those of us who grew up in the church or have otherwise spent a lot of time in church with the Bible’s stories, it can be hard to recapture the surprise of these texts. This Sunday I tried to help us see the surprises and think about what they have to say to us.
As always, let me know what you think as you are inclined and able.
