A list of reminders

Artist: Haley Holtslander

There are lots of lists in our lives. To-do lists. Shopping lists. Christmas lists. There are even a few lists in the Bible. Most of our lists seem to contain things we need to do or get. However, there are some lists of reminders. The picture for this week’s post is from an art assignment my daughter Haley did in university.

The list isn’t so much a set of requirements but rather a list of things it is good to remember.

Our Epistle Lesson this Sunday is another list of things that are good to remember. Romans 12:9-21 is a list of things we should do but it isn’t a list of requirements. That’s confusing, let me explain. The things Paul talks about are things most of us already know, and I’m quite sure his original recipients knew about them too. Also, Paul isn’t saying, “Do these things or you are not part of the community.” The list is rather a list of reminders of the behaviours we should do and what is more we want to do . . . but sometimes forget. If I might be so bold as to paraphrase Paul, he is saying, “These are all things you might need to be reminded of but there’s a good chance you’re doing them already and that’s great!”

I hope you find the sermons reminders of the things you are doing and want to be reminded to do. As always, let me know what you think.

  1. It feels so good to know that even if we miss church, we can still get to hear your message.

Having a great visit with my brother Ron and his wife Helen. We celebrated Helen’s 80th yesterday.

See you next Sunday, have a good week.
