Let’s talk about grace

Grace is one of those things that I can talk about for a long time.

I came into a preliminary understanding of grace much later than some people might have supposed. It wasn’t until after I finished my undergrad degree in theology, of all things, that I began to gain a visceral understanding rather than a simple (and even simplistic) academic understanding. I knew, at some level, that grace was God’s unmerited favour but that is such a small way to think about it . . . if you just look at that phrase and leave it at that. It is when you begin to spend some time with what that might mean that you begin be blown away by the implications.

There may be better and more comprehensive definitions of grace but I like that little one because of all that it leaves out. It doesn’t say God’s unmerited favour to the deserving, the rich, the privileged, the well-educated . . . . It is just God’s unmerited favour period.
