Wisdom and self-control

I quite like the picture for wisdom but I couldn’t find anything I liked for self-control so the second part of the sermon title doesn’t get a picture.

Wisdom and self-control seem to go together but they sort of don’t too. This confusion, possibly only for me, makes this a tricky week to preach out of the Lectionary but the more I pondered the two ideas the more I liked the idea of exploring them in a sermon.

I talked a bit about how wisdom is personified as a woman in the book of Proverbs and then turned to James to talk about self-control. One of the things I noted is that wisdom and self-control can create a virtuous circle where wisdom helps with self-control and self-control can help us see wisdom and so on.

This is a sermon, I get them every once in a while, that seems both too long and too short. I’m curious to hear what you might think of the length. Let me know as you are able and inclined.
