Just another way we are all human

Doubt. There are so many things that all people have in common; doubt is simply one more. One of the things I point out in both sermons is that doubt is part of the normal human condition. Being completely convinced of everything at all times is not the sign of good mental health.

We see one of Jesus’ followers expressing doubt in today’s gospel lesson, the famous or infamous Doubting Thomas. There are some really good things to take from this part of John but one of the things I wanted to highlight is that Thomas’ doubt is not condemned by Jesus but rather is addressed and when the doubt is addressed, Thomas believes. The issue is never doubt itself, but what we do with the doubt.

    More than law

Today was Heritage Sunday in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. I don’t always “do” anything with Sundays outside of the Liturgical year but this one had an interesting tie-in with the Gospel lesson for today. I don’t know if anyone else sees it, but I saw a connection between the Law that Jesus addresses in…

    Gifts

This post is a couple of days late because on Sunday we had a lovely time celebrating my youngest daughter, Neala, turning eight years old! Wow! Time just flies by doesn’t it. So let’s talk about gifts. I’m not thinking of the kind of gifts that Neala just got but rather the gifts that everyone…

    More wisdom

I don’t mind using the same picture two Sundays in a row, so I used this one again. As I mentioned at the beginning of today’s sermon, September in Lectionary Year B is almost wisdom month. There is nothing wrong with spending some time with the idea and reality of wisdom. I think the primary…
